Hallux Rigidus
Hallux rigidus is an arthritic condition of the great toe joint characterized by swelling, inflammation and pain. Also, a bony bump is usually located on the top of the great toe joint. For comparison, a bunion usually has the bony bump on the side of the foot. Symptoms occur mainly with weight-bearing and movement, however, in later stages pain can occur when sitting and resting. Treatment options include custom orthotics, oral medications, steroid injections and topical pain creams. As a last resort option, surgery is aimed at removing painful arthritic bone spurs and restoring range of motion to the joint. If surgery is needed, we have performed hundreds of procedures on this condition.
